LA CAUSERIE STUDENT-PLACEMENT ASSESSMENT

SPANISH DEPARTMENT

Please use the following guidelines for determining which of La Causerie’s Spanish courses are appropriate for you.

Spanish I

This course is designed for students who have not previously studied Spanish. The instructor will assume that the students are new to the study of the Spanish language and that they are new to the concept of studying foreign languages. Students who have studied one year of high-school or one semester of college Spanish will probably want to start here, as well, especially if several years have passed since that earlier study took place. Typically, Spanish I students are unable to engage in any conversation and need orientation on the fundamentals of Spanish grammar and pronunciation. Please see the course description for details about what the course will cover.

Spanish II

This course is designed for students who have completed Spanish I at La Causerie or who have studied two years of high-school or two semesters of college Spanish, especially if several years have passed since that earlier study took place. Typically, Spanish II students are able to engage in extremely limited conversation and need orientation on the fundamentals of Spanish grammar with continued work on pronunciation. Please see the course description for details about what the course will cover.

Spanish III

This course is designed for students who have completed Spanish II at La Causerie or who have studied three years of high-school or three semesters of college Spanish, especially if several years have passed since that earlier study took place. Typically, Spanish III students are able to engage in some conversation and need to push toward higher levels of Spanish grammar and usage, with some remaining work on pronunciation. Please see the course description for details about what the course will cover.

Spanish IV

This course is designed for students who have completed Spanish III at La Causerie or who have studied four years of high-school or four semesters of college Spanish. Typically, Spanish IV students are at the brink of being conversational and need to punch through some final barriers to fluency. They can talk, and all they need is to fill in some final grammatical gaps and get some speaking practice. Please see the course description for details about what the course will cover.

Spanish V

This course is designed for students who have completed Spanish IV at La Causerie or who have studied four years of high-school or four+ semesters of college Spanish. Typically, Spanish V students are able to converse with minor guidance and correction and need to refine their skills through reading, writing, and conversation. They read, write, and speak well and are in the process of putting the final touches on their Spanish-language skills. Please see the course description for details about what the course will cover.
