COURSE DESCRIPTION: This grammar course is intended for students who have never before studied Spanish or for those who have not used the language for so long that they need to start over. The two sections are identical courses. Students may enroll in either one section or the other, but not both. Enrolled members will attend the same section of the course each Friday morning.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This advanced grammar course builds on the foundations of what you have learned in Spanish I, II, and III. We shall use the textbook principally as a guide for vocabulary development and as a general grammar outline. Most of the grammar points will reveal themselves through English-Spanish translation exercises assigned as homework. Since we are completing the language in this final grammar course, we shall discuss a broad range of topics, including all remaining verb tenses, advanced grammar details, slang words and expressions, country-specific vocabulary, and phonetics.


Prerequisite: The material covered in Spanish III at La Causerie, in Así Es Lessons 8, 9, 10, and 11, or the equivalent.

SPANISH INTERMEDIATE CONVERSATION (1.0 hr)

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This intermediate conversation course is aimed at furthering the development of the students’ oral and listening skills through the discussion of topics presented by Spanish and Latin-American writers. Classroom discussions will be based on readings and videos that inspire discussion and analysis of the topics. Readings will include pieces from a variety of authors and countries. The professor will conduct the class entirely in Spanish with only limited grammatical explanations in English. At La Causerie, language takes precedence over content, so if you are unable to express a thought in Spanish, please simplify it so that your contribution is consistently in Spanish.

 

Prerequisite: Students should be able to participate in dialogue without disruptive pauses and should speak with sufficient grammatical accuracy and adequate vocabulary to enter into moderately complex conversations.

 

COURSE MATERIAL: There is no required textbook. The instructor will select videos and readings and provide a plan at the first class session.






SPANISH SPONTANEOUS ADVANCED CONVERSATION (1.0 hr)

10:00 – 11:00 Instructor: Graciela Diaz



COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This advanced conversation course is intended to help students gain fluency and confidence in speaking and understanding spoken Spanish. The instructor will facilitate the conversation and assist with the correct use of vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. Students will raise topics spontaneously, interact with each other and with the professor, and participate in the discussion entirely in Spanish. The professor will conduct the class in Spanish and make all grammatical explanations in Spanish as well. At La Causerie, language takes precedence over content, so if you are unable to express a thought in Spanish, please simplify it so that your contribution is consistently in Spanish.

Prerequisite: Students should be able to participate in dialogue without disruptive pauses. They should be able to speak with sufficient grammatical accuracy and adequate vocabulary to allow them to enter into lengthy and complex conversations. 

COURSE MATERIAL: No required textbook. The topics to be discussed will be suggested by the instructor and selected by the students. 

  



SPANISH READING AND CONVERSATION (1.0 hr)

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This advanced reading and conversation course is aimed at furthering the development of the students’ oral and listening skills through the discussion of topics presented by Spanish and Spanish-American writers. Classroom discussions will be based on readings that inspire discussion and analysis of the topics. Readings will include works like La Rebelión de los Colgados, Macario, and Canastas de Cuentos. Videos or movies accompany some of the writings. The professor will conduct the classroom discussions in Spanish and make all grammatical explanations in Spanish as well. At La Causerie, language takes precedence over content, so if you are unable to express a thought in Spanish, please simplify it so that your contribution is consistently in Spanish.

Prerequisite:  Students should be able to participate in dialogue without disruptive pauses and should speak with sufficient grammatical accuracy and adequate vocabulary to enter into lengthy and complex conversations.

COURSE MATERIAL: No required textbook. For the initial classes, the instructor will distribute the readings. As the course progresses, the students will have input to the choice of readings.
