Cultural Programs

Mark your calendar for these events.

This Friday, November 8, at noon, Italian teacher Louis Imperiale will present a program on Italian folk music.

Friday, November 22, Paula Mitre and Maggie Finefrock will present a slide show in Spanish: El Caminode Santiago Pilgrimage.

We are interested in offering at least three or four cultural programs for each language throughout the school year.  If you have suggestions or ideas please talk with any of the board members or Amanda Hassett who will get you in touch with the right person.  We pay a $50 honorarium to speakers and we take them out to lunch if they have time.

Other programs are going to be offered so watch for information about the date

on Wiki or in the newsletter.

Fall Business Meeting

The business meeting is November 15, 2013 at noon.  Each year there are two meetings to which all members are welcome. The business meeting is relatively short, and is a great opportunity for any member to give input to the La Causerie organization. You’ll get to meet the officers who manage our organization, see our operating budget and its allocations, get updates on enrollment and learn about plans for upcoming activities.

Holiday Breaks:

Classes will not be held on Friday November 29, or December 27, 2013 and on Friday, January 3, 2014.

School Year Reminders

Parking can be tight.  Please remember to leave the parking spaces available for the patrons of the Crestwood Shops. We understand parking can be hard to come by so please allow extra time to find a space in the church parking lot or along the street and avoid the spaces in front of the shops.

Snow Policy

When Shawnee Mission School District closes for bad weather, La Causerie will also be closed. Please listen to the list of school closings on television and radio or check the district’s website,

Helpful Hints for Classes

Please fill out a nametag each week.  On the first day of class, we will have a table set up on the first floor for nametags and late registration. After that, nametags will be in the hallway on the third floor.  Our teachers want to be able to call you by name and they may help you get quickly acquainted with your classmates so you can have a more enjoyable and personal experience.

Books do get left behind sometimes so we suggest you put your name in all your textbooks and reference books.   You’ll be glad to find your lost book in our Lost and Found.

100-Year Celebration Continues with two Community Events

Día de Los Muertos at Mattie Rhodes Center

Cathy Mosley, a member of La Causerie, and some fellow members are organizing a display alter about La Causerie in honor of our 100-year anniversary. The display will be included at the Mattie Rhodes exhibit, which celebrates this colorful and important holiday of Mexico.   We will be searching through our archives for pictures and documents to honor all those that helped the organization get started 100 years ago.  If you have any thoughts or information you think is important please contact us.  Día de Los Muertos festivities begin on Friday, October 5, through November 16, 2013.

You will not be expected to feed the whole school -- three or four other members will contribute, too. La Causerie provides the coffee and tea and we ask for donations to help cover the beverage costs, which are not allotted in the La Causerie budget.

Textbooks through Amazon

Unfortunately, Amazon will no longer pay referral fees to La Causerie for links to book purchases, etc. You may have heard about this situation where states pass laws requiring online retailers to collect state sales tax if they pay referral fees to an entity inside the state.  Missouri did pass such a law, and so our "Amazon Associate" account has been closed.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact our wonderful board assistant, Amanda Hassett, or any of the board members.  You may contact us by phone at 816-301-4110.
