Annual Membership Meeting and Spring Fte

The Annual Membership Meeting will be held on Friday, April 24th at noon. We will elect officers for the next year, acknowledge our teachers, thank volunteers, and welcome new board members. Plans are in the works for next yearÕs classes and input from members is always appreciated, so plan to join us, even if you havenÕt been to class recently.

The following slate of officers has been proposed:

President                                                   Dalene Bradford

1st Vice President (Membership Chair)             Judith Walter

2nd Vice President (Social Chair)           Jeff Piehler (co-chair)

                                                               Carol Cowden (co-chair)

Secretary                                                   Judy Pearlstein

Assistant SecÕy (Newsletter)                          Kathy Courtney

Treasurer                                                   Inez Pennington

Assistant Treasurer (Textbook Chair)               Joan Daniels

The meeting will be immediately followed by our Spring Fte. Members are asked to bring a dish to be shared with the group. Finger foods are best, including hors dÕoeuvres, snacks, nibbles, and desserts. Food with an international flair is especially welcome. We will provide drinks, plates, napkins, utensils, and cups.

Our Social Chairs, Carol Cowden and Jeff Piehler, have organized a great party for us. TheyÕd love to have volunteers help them set up before the party starts as well as take down after the party ends. If youÕd like to volunteer to help, please call or email Carol or Jeff.

The church Fellowship Hall is currently being renovated and we may be the first to use this lovely new space. Renovations at The Second Presbyterian Church are being handled by the firm of Gastinger Walker Harden Architects, which has a couple of LCF connections: LCF member Joan GastingerÕs husband is a co-owner, and LCF Treasurer (and past President) Inez Pennington is an employee. The projectÕs lead architect is Wade Walker.

Annual Used Book Sale

Do you have foreign language books, tapes, CDs that you no longer use? Somebody else at La Causerie might enjoy having them, so consider placing them in the annual used book sale.

The sale will take place during the Annual Meeting and Spring Fte on April 24th.  Bring a book or two, mark each item in pencil with your name and the price you want for it.

WeÕll prominently place these on a table and members can shop at their leisure. As usual, the selling price will be divided equally between the seller and La Causerie.  If you have questions, call Jan Cohen.

(Please note that this book sale differs from our fall Textbook Exchange, where you can sell current LCF textbooks without splitting the proceeds with LCF. For more information about selling your current textbooks, contact Joan Daniels.

Spanish Program

UMKC Professor Alberto Villamandos will make a presentation in Spanish on Friday, April 10th, at noon. Dr. Villamandos, a native of Spain, has a doctorate in Spanish language and literature from the University of Ottawa, Canada. His main interest is literature from the Iberian Peninsula. He is currently writing a book on intellectuals in Barcelona.

Members Making News

The farmhouse dream home of LCF member Annelies Leuthardt and her husband is featured in the March 29th Sunday edition of The Kansas City Star. Look for the article on Cabinetry/Style and Function on the front page of the House and Home section. The firm of Gastinger Walker Harden Architects was responsible for this project as well (Kirk Gastinger was lead architect).

Film Festivals

The Italian Film Festival USA will be held at the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art at Johnson County Community College April 24-25. Films have not yet been announced. Screenings are free. All movies are in Italian with English subtitles. You can check the following web site in the coming weeks to see what movies will be showing:

Kansas City FilmFest will take place April 22–26 at the newly renovated AMC Mainstreet Theatre (downtown).  There are a number of foreign films in their program which is now available on their website at www.kcfilmfest.org. La Causerie Franaise is a sponsor of one of the films and weÕll let you know which one soon.

HŽlne Perriguey-KeeneÕs classes recently ŅdiscoveredÓ a wealth of resources on the TV5 website. Many of our members subscribe to this French cable channel.  But those who do not receive it can still benefit from its companion educational website:  www.t5.org.  Many of the channelÕs regular programs are repeated here (for free) and there are accompanying lessons, quizzes and other resources.  Check out their WebTV section and poke around all the many videos—in French.

If you know of other such resources in our three languages, email Paula Kartus.  WeÕll put them in an upcoming newsletter for members who want to keep up their foreign language practice over the summer.
