Fall Membership Meeting Scheduled for November 14

Each year there are two business meetings to which all members are invited. These meetings are a chance for members to provide input to their organization and for you to develop a better understanding of the workings of La Causerie. The fall membership meeting will be held Friday, November 14th at noon (room to be determined). Please plan to stay for a short meeting. You’ll meet the officers who manage La Causerie, see our operating budget and its allocations, and learn about plans for upcoming activities.

French Program on November 21

Gaufres, frites et chocolat – What do you know about Belgium? LCF French teacher Marie Helene Moulaert will discuss in French her native country and touch on some of the things that Belgium is most famous for, and perhaps a few that will surprise you. Please join us on the Friday before Thanksgiving (November 21st)) for this informative PowerPoint program.

Holiday Fźte to be held at noon, December 12

Mark your calendars!  The Holiday Fete will take place at noon on December 12th, following classes.  We’ll have a great variety of food and fun available for you. The annual event will be held in Witherspoon Hall on the first floor of the church.

This year’s program promises to be both fun and delicious, courtesy of The Better Cheddar, a local gourmet food store recognized by the National Association of the Specialty Food Trade as one of the top five specialty food retailers in the U.S. Mr. Lincoln Broadbooks, store manager, will make a presentation and then offer a tasting of cheeses from countries where Italian, French, and Spanish are spoken.

As usual, each member is asked to bring finger food to be shared with the group—hors d’oeuvres, snacks, fruit, desserts. Food with an international flair is especially welcome, including olives, pate, and breads from countries where our three languages are spoken. We’ll provide drinks, plates, and silverware.

If you are looking for a small but helpful volunteer opportunity, email Jeff Piehler or Carol Cowden to let us know if you are available to help us set up this event. We’d love to have your help!

Holiday Class Schedule

The holiday season is fast approaching, so we’d like to remind you about our holiday class schedule. There will be no classes on the Friday after Thanksgiving (November 28th). Classes will be held on December 5th and December 12th (the day of our Holiday Fźte), after which our winter break will start. Classes will resume on Friday, January 9th. Our Fall/Winter schedule can be found below, at the end of the newsletter.

Shop and Support La Causerie

If you’re doing holiday shopping through, there’s a way to support La Causerie as you shop online.

If you shop by starting with any of our links at, we make some money on your purchase. It doesn’t cost you extra (promise).  It’s just a special arrangement offers to nonprofit organizations.

This applies to anything you buy through Amazon, not just books. It’s a cool way to boost that feeling of holiday giving this season: link through us to and you give to friends, families, and La Causerie!

Family Weekends at Concordia Language Villages

Looking to get your whole family involved in your language learning adventures? Check out the Family Programs at Concordia Language Villages. We’ve highlighted the experiences of some of our members at the two-week language immersion programs offered by this organization, but they also offer both week-long and weekend programs for the whole family. These programs “serve as great preparation for a family trip abroad or for a child's summer experience at the Villages. Many families come to explore family heritage or to learn about an entirely new culture.” You can learn more about these programs and find a schedule of weekend programs for many different languages on their website,

Homework Assignments On Our Wiki

Miss a class?  Forget to write down the details of your assignment? Check the WIKI on our website (, where our instructors post weekly homework assignments. Just click on the “Wiki” tab on the top menu bar of the homepage, click on your language, then on your class.

Snow Policy

Winter’s not far away, so we’d like to remind you that La Causerie Franćaise follows the Shawnee Mission School District practice on snowy or icy days. If the Shawnee Mission District closes its schools due to bad weather, La Causerie will also be closed. In case of inclement weather, please listen to the list of school closings on television and radio or check the District’s website.

And, yes, there is a reason we don’t follow the KCMO School District policy (even though our school is in their boundaries). Over the past several years the board has watched how the various districts handle snow days.  KCMO, because, many of its students ride buses, sometimes cancels school because of cold weather only.  This is appropriate to protect students standing at bus stops, but not relevant to our situation.

Have a suggestion or comment about classes, teachers, logistics, LCF in general? Drop us a note and put it in the Suggestion Box at the top of the stairs on the third floor. We welcome your input!
