Classes will not be held on Friday, March 23, 2007. Enjoy your day off.
Thanks are due
Many thanks to Adamson & Associates, Real Estate Appraisers & Consultants, for their generous donation of four (very much needed) white boards. And thanks to Veronica for arranging this donation.
If you can support Adamson & Assoc. in some way, please do. If you happen to know Henry Adamson, president, or anyone else with the firm, please thank them for supporting La Causerie.
Our very special Veronica Bergonzoni is experiencing some health issues that will keep her away from La Causerie (and away from work) for the next month to six weeks. You can send cards and perk-her-ups to her home address, listed in your Livret.
On Friday, April 27 La Causerie will hold its Annual Business Meeting, including election of officers for the upcoming year.
We are seeking interested members to assume roles on the board. It is always good to have new energy in our leadership and several current board members have served full terms of office.
If you are willing to serve on the board, please let one of our board members know. You can find the list of current officers later in the newsletter.
All Souls Unitarian Church (north of the Plaza and across the street from the Kemper Museum) hosts a free documentary film series at 7 p.m. on Tuesday evenings. There is plenty of free parking in the church parking lot and movies are shown in the sanctuary. On March 20 there is a double feature of two short Spanish documentaries:
Fuerza is a documentary about the effects of immigration on two small cities: Goshen, Indiana, and Apan, Hidalgo, Mexico. The documentary was produced by Soluz Films, a group of four Goshen College students who won a student video documentary competition held by the Goshen College Peace and Justice Journalism Program, funded by Plowshares Peace Studies Project.Fuerza (Katrina Dyck , David Martinez , Ben Noll, James Weber • 2006 • 30 minutes)
Maquilapolis (City of Factories) is the inspiring story of women workers in Tijuana who, though laboring for poverty wages, still stand up to transnational corporations to win severance pay and to clean up toxic waste sites. The film demonstrates that global corporations can chase cheap labor around the world but will inevitably encounter workers' struggle for dignity.
The filmmakers worked collaboratively with the factory workers, providing cameras to the women and teaching them how to shoot. For five years the women documented their daily lives and the events in their communities, often giving the film the intimate tone of a video diary.
